Faster Algorithms for some Optimization Problems on Collinear Points

چکیده
We propose faster algorithms for the following three optimization problems on n collinear points, i.e., points in dimension one. The first two problems are known to be NP-hard in higher dimensions. 1. Maximizing total area of disjoint disks: In this problem the goal is to maximize the total area of nonoverlapping disks centered at the points. Acharyya, De, and Nandy (2017) presented an O(n)-time algorithm for this problem. We present an optimal Θ(n)-time algorithm. 2. Minimizing sum of the radii of client-server coverage: The n points are partitioned into two sets, namely clients and servers. The goal is to minimize the sum of the radii of disks centered at servers such that every client is in some disk, i.e., in the coverage range of some server. Lev-Tov and Peleg (2005) presented an O(n)-time algorithm for this problem. We present an O(n)-time algorithm, thereby improving the running time by a factor of Θ(n). 3. Minimizing total area of point-interval coverage: The n input points belong to an interval I. The goal is to find a set of disks of minimum total area, covering I, such that every disk contains at least one input point. We present an algorithm that solves this problem in O(n) time.

A New Approach to Solve N-Queen Problem with Parallel Genetic Algorithm
Over the past few decades great efforts were made to solve uncertain hybrid optimization problems. The n-Queen problem is one of such problems that many solutions have been proposed for. The traditional methods to solve this problem are exponential in terms of runtime and are not acceptable in terms of space and memory complexity. In this study, parallel genetic algorithms are proposed to solve...
متن کاملA Meta-heuristic Algorithm for Global Numerical Optimization Problems inspired by Vortex in fluid physics
One of the most important issues in engineering is to find the optimal global points of the functions used. It is not easy to find such a point in some functions due to the reasons such as large number of dimensions or inability to derive them from the function. Also in engineering modeling, we do not have the relationships of many functions, but we can input and output them as a black box. The...
متن کاملTesting Soccer League Competition Algorithm in Comparison with Ten Popular Meta-heuristic Algorithms for Sizing Optimization of Truss Structures
Recently, many meta-heuristic algorithms are proposed for optimization of various problems. Some of them originally are presented for continuous optimization problems and some others are just applicable for discrete ones. In the literature, sizing optimization of truss structures is one of the discrete optimization problems which is solved by many meta-heuristic algorithms. In this paper, in or...
متن کاملA FAST GA-BASED METHOD FOR SOLVING TRUSS OPTIMIZATION PROBLEMS
Due to the complex structural issues and increasing number of design variables, a rather fast optimization algorithm to lead to a global swift convergence history without multiple attempts may be of major concern. Genetic Algorithm (GA) includes random numerical technique that is inspired by nature and is used to solve optimization problems. In this study, a novel GA method based on self-a...
متن کاملOPTIMAL DESIGN OF TRUSS STRUCTURES BY IMPROVED MULTI-OBJECTIVE FIREFLY AND BAT ALGORITHMS
The main aim of the present paper is to propose efficient multi-objective optimization algorithms (MOOAs) to tackle truss structure optimization problems. The proposed meta-heuristic algorithms are based on the firefly algorithm (FA) and bat algorithm (BA), which have been recently developed for single-objective optimization. In order to produce a well distributed Pareto front, some improvement...
